A Modern Take on Tradition

The Black Tulip Turkish Coffee Set takes its inspiration from the iconic tulip figure found on coffee cups and tea trays used in Turkish coffee houses. By reimagining these cultural forms and shapes, Yıldırım has created a design that pays homage to tradition while offering a fresh perspective.

What sets the Black Tulip apart is its fusion of cultural and traditional imprints. Turkish coffee is known for its unique preparation method, where coffee is slowly cooked to create a thick layer of foam. This foam is then transferred to cups before the cooking process resumes, resulting in a distinct taste. The coffee cups in the Black Tulip set are designed to enhance this experience, with a width, depth, and height of 60mm, ensuring the perfect balance of flavors.

Additionally, the Black Tulip set showcases the Turkish tradition of hospitality and respect. Special cups are used for guests as a token of honor, and the Black Tulip set continues this tradition with its artistic and elegant design. The cups and saucers are made of durable porcelain, while the molded plywood tray features a solid wood carrying handle for added stability.

Functionality is also a key aspect of the Black Tulip design. The saucers extend from the tray, allowing easy access to the cups from any side. The curved-up corner of the saucer provides a comfortable grip, while the tray handle ensures balanced carriage. These thoughtful details make serving and enjoying Turkish coffee a seamless experience.

The Black Tulip project was initiated in May 2015 in Turkey and completed in July 2015. During the research phase, Yıldırım explored various ceramic and porcelain products, as well as figures from Turkish culture and lifestyle. The challenge was to strike the right balance between modern design and traditional elements, resulting in a harmonious synthesis.

The Black Tulip Turkish Coffee Set has received recognition for its innovative design. In 2017, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
